How to break 90: the version that works

Here's the math nobody does. Bogey on every hole is 90. Break 90 means one par in eighteen holes, with no doubles. That's it. You don't need to hit it better. You need to stop making doubles, and that is a planning problem, not a swing problem.

Where the strokes go

Pull five scorecards and count three things: doubles or worse, three-putts, and penalty strokes. Those three categories are almost always the gap between you and 89. The full swing is usually fourth on the list, and it's the only one people take lessons on.

The three shots you need

A tee shot that finds grass. Not driver. Whatever club puts your whole miss pattern in play. For most 90s players that's a 3-wood or hybrid on most holes, and the lost distance costs less than the lost ball.

A number you trust. One full-swing distance you can hit to a green nine times out of ten. Mine's 115. Yours might be 100 or 130. Build the hole backwards from it: tee shot to the number, number to the middle of the green, two putts, done.

A chip that gets on the green. Not close. On. A chip to fifteen feet and two putts is a bogey; a skulled chip over the back is a double. The first one is good enough.

Two hours a week

One hour on the practice green: half chipping to a circle, half lag putting from thirty feet. One hour of range time hitting only your number club and your safe tee club, at targets, with a pre-shot routine. That's it. Nothing on the driver, nothing on the swing you saw on Instagram.

Then play a round where you aim at the middle of every green and don't hit driver once. Most people break 90 that day and don't believe it. The playing lesson is that round, with me in the cart asking the right question before every shot.

Questions people ask

Do I need to hit driver to break 90?

No. Plenty of people break 90 hitting 3-wood all day. The scorecard doesn't have a column for distance.

What handicap is breaking 90?

Roughly a 16 to 18, depending on the course. Breaking 90 consistently is about a 14.

How long does it take?

With the plan above and a round a week, most people do it in a month or two. Without the plan, some people never do.
